How I was healed of crippling rheumatoid arthritis

without conventional medicine and drugs

MY JOURNEY TO BETTER HEALTH

by Yolly Bramlett

Dear friend:

The purpose of this testimony is to share with you how I was healed of a disabling disease, rheumatoid arthritis.

I hope this will be of encouragement to you in your quest or journey for a better health, if you have a health problem now or in the future.

Please know that this is provided for educational and information purposes only. Since my sickness I have become formally trained in nutritional counseling, but I CANNOT provide medical advice. I can only tell you my own experience, the choices I made and what happened to me. You must make any judgments and decisions for yourself to find your pathway to healing or a better health. My desire is to help you find hope, especially when told, “There is no known cause and no known cure” for your illness, as I was told by a doctor. Your pathway to healing may not be the same as mine, but I trust my story will be an inspiration and a blessing to you.

The beginning. My health crisis began in May of 1996, when I started experiencing the following symptoms:

Plantar fasciiatis. There was tenderness on my feet due to inflammation on the plantar facia muscles in my feet. Getting up in the morning was a struggle. I could not get on my feet right away. I felt like I was walking on stones barefooted. Sometimes my heels were so painful that it felt like I stepped on a sharp object. I struggled to put on my shoes because my feet were so painful. Working in an office where we were required to wear pumps all the time, I had to ask permission to wear tennis shoes to help relieve the pain.

General pain. My whole body was so in constant pain that even a slight touch hurt. The excruciating pain sometimes kept me awake the whole night. I had flare ups where it felt like there was fire in my joints or my joints were being drilled. Walking was so difficult-- I had to make tiny steps to get to where I needed to go. Even reading a book was hard because my fingers were so painful that I could hardly hold the book to keep it open so I could read. Almost everything that I needed to do daily, even a simple thing like brushing my teeth was an everyday struggle. The pain I was experiencing was not only debilitating but also crippling.

Stiffness in my body, joints, neck, arms, hands made it so difficult to comb my hair, put my food in the microwave to warm it or cook my oatmeal for breakfast. I had to carry my right arm with my left hand so I can raise it to open the microwave to put my food. To get in the car, I had to get in try to sit first then bring my left leg in and carry my right leg in. Getting out of the car was also a struggle.

Inflammation. When I had flare ups the joints on my shoulders, my knees, my fingers, knuckles, ankles, toes, hips were inflamed and became so tender.

Fatigue. I was always tired. I woke up tired and I went to bed tired. I felt like I was always pushing myself to do my daily chores both at home and at work.

I experienced lethargy and had no energy.

Sleeplessness. Because of all the symptoms I was experiencing, I had lots of nights where I stayed awake.

I was also feeling cold always. My husband, Jim, thought I was weird feeling cold even in summer because I used a blanket when we would go to sleep. At work, my office mate thought it was strange that I had my small heater on during summer to keep me warm. One time, our chief of staff, walked in our office and had a question-mark look on his face because I had my heater on. It sure was weird and strange, but I felt flu-like symptoms all the time.

My Prayer

In the Scriptures, God says, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3, NKJV).

Jim and I knew about God’s promises for healing in the Bible, and relying, leaning and depending on them, so we prayed and asked God to heal me. We asked for prayers, and many prayed—family, co-workers, friends both in the U.S. and the Philippines, where I am from, including my church and other churches we visited. On several occasions, I was anointed with oil. God’s Word in James 5:14,15 says, "Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up" (KJV). So for me, that was a very important thing to do because God’s Word says so.

As I prayed for healing, I also prayed that I would not miss whatever I had to learn from this illness. During that time, I craved for really knowing Him in a more intimate way—just to have Jesus in my life. I had a hunger for a deeper meaning of God’s Word and a hunger to have more of Jesus in my life.

The Diagnosis

As Jim and I prayed for my healing, I wish and wanted God so bad to heal me instantly, but God did not do that, and instead He took me on a journey, which eventually brought my healing. My symptoms started in May of 1996 and it was not until September of that year that I was led to see a family practice doctor. After two weeks, I called him back for the result of my blood test, and he advised me to see a specialist in rheumatology and recommended one of the leading specialists in that field. I made an appointment with the specialist and went for tests. More blood work was done. The specialist suspected I either had lupus or rheumatoid arthritis—both an autoimmune diseases, but she wanted to be certain so she asked me to come back in two weeks after she had seen the results of my blood work. I left her clinic not sure what to think.

A couple of questions popped in my mind: Could this really be happening to me, and what caused it? I always thought I was healthy and I was doing all the right things and making right or good choices to stay healthy.

Jim was waiting for me in the car and soon as I told him what the specialist said, we decided we were going to trust Jesus in it and reject whatever the final diagnosis might be. Before we left the parking lot, Jim and I prayed and continued to claim my healing based on the promises of God’s Word.

After two weeks, I went back to the specialist and got my final diagnosis. I was told that I had rheumatoid arthritis, a degenerative and incurable disease—that there was “no known cause and no known cure,” using her exact words. She further told me that it would eventually cripple me and all she could do is to give me a treatment that would help slow it down or, which to me, in other words, mask or cover the symptoms, or a quick fix. I would also be taking medications for the rest of my life. The thought of taking medications for the rest of my life scared me. You see, I have never been so sick in my life up until that time.

As she was telling me this, in my heart I was rejecting what she was saying—I did not accept the verdict she gave me about my health because I knew deep in my heart that Jesus is my Healer and that something I have done or have not done caused this to happen—there should be a reason why I got sick. It has always been my nature when something is being told me and am not totally convinced that I want to find out the reason why. Also, there is a Christian song that goes “Whose report will you be believe? I believe the report of the Lord.” Yes, I chose to believe the report of the Lord.

The Treatments—conventional vs. preventive/alternative (nutrition).

The treatment came in the form of drugs. During that time, I really had no knowledge of nutrition, even though I always thought I did. Before taking the medication, I called my sister, who works for a doctor, and asked her to look at their physician’s reference book, to see what were the side effects of this medication. Although according to the book there were some bad side effects from it, I took the medication given me because I needed a relief from the pain. (I later learned that these type drugs can destroy intestinal linings and can cause intestinal bleeding after long use.) After the first week of being on medication, I felt worse. I felt I was starting to have an ulcer—a sensation like I was hungry all the time. So on my next follow up, I told the specialist what I was experiencing. She then gave me another drug to protect my stomach. Again, I took the medication but then I started retaining fluid. It was like a chain reaction. I felt I was trading one illness for another. Also, during my follow up, Jim and I asked the specialist what we could do in the area of nutrition to help me get well and she did not have an answer, acting as though the question was irrelevant. (I later learned that this is typical for most medical doctors.)

When Jim and I left the clinic, I remember praying, “God, I wish I could find a doctor who knows about nutrition.” I was very determined to research about rheumatoid arthritis and determined to fight it. To do this, I immediately claimed and held on to God’s promise in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (NKJV) because I knew I would not be able to do it in my own strength. I was reminded of my life verse which is found in Jeremiah 29:11-13, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (NIV). I knew that if God allowed this thing to happen to me, it was not to harm me but to prosper me. And that if I seek Him, I will find Him. Difficult as it may seem, I stepped out of the diagnosis and rejected what I was told, which was “no known cause and no known cure” for this illness.

Was I being unrealistic or mean to think that the specialist did not know what she was saying? No, because she told me exactly what she knew, based on her knowledge. But there was something in me that told me that there should be a cause and whatever it was is why I got sick. I could not just accept that there was no reason for it. And I also knew in my heart that I was going to be healed because I have Jesus as my Healer. He later brought this promise to me in Exodus 15:26, “He said, ‘If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you’” (NIV). “I am the Lord who heals you”—what a promise that came just in time when I needed it! I chose to believe it.

I was at my worst in December 1996. Our trip to be with my family in another state on Christmas day was the most difficult one I have ever had. I was in great pain all the time I was there but determined not to let the pain ruin my visit with my family. I have chosen and already decided when I was diagnosed that I was not going to let it control my life. This is not to say that I never had down days. I had many. But I chose not stay there for long. God’s promises were very important to me and I held on to them, especially during those down days, which I now believe is what kept me going. I also thanked God each day for what I was going through because I knew He is trustworthy and I reminded myself over and over again of His promises and that I would not let this illness be in control of my life.

Because I was getting sicker with the medication, I chose to stop taking them without checking with the doctor. (Note: If you are seriously ill, please do not do this without checking with your physician—this is just something I decided to do for myself.) I struggled whether to keep my follow-up January 5 (1997) appointment, which was after we got back from vacation, or cancel it. I continued to seek our Lord for my healing and asked Him if I should go for my follow up. After a few days of praying about it, I felt strongly that I should not go and so I cancelled my appointment.

Then one day at work, at about 11:00 a.m., I was typing and working away when suddenly I experienced an incredible peace, which totally enveloped me. I wish I had more words to describe how I actually felt God’s presence. I did not hear His audible voice but He impressed upon me in my spirit that He was going to heal me. I was filled with such an overwhelming joy.

To continue, at that time Jim already had some knowledge in nutrition so he started me on some nutritional supplements—antioxidants like Pycnogenol, garlic capsules, vitamins for women. Then he started juicing carrots, celery and apples (I later discovered through my studies the healing properties of these three). Jim was so kind to do the juicing for me because I could not do it. My hands were painful. After the fifth day of taking freshly squeezed juice, I noticed a difference on how I felt—I started feeling better. I got really excited because through that very simple thing that we did, I immediately saw a result. So I continued drinking fresh juice every day and taking supplements. I did not know what food to eliminate from my diet since at that time I had no knowledge of nutrition as to it relates to health. And remember, when I asked the specialist about nutrition and how it could help me, she knew nothing about it and offered no answer. I did not understand at that time why a specialist or a doctor would not know anything about nutrition. But more medical doctors now who are into preventive and alternative medicine are very knowledgeable in this field.

One day in the later part of January 1997, as I was reading the newspaper, I saw an ad of a medical doctor with masters degree in nutrition. His ad said that one of the diseases that he treats is rheumatoid arthritis. My heart jumped, and I thought, “Could this be God’s answer to my prayer?” It was exactly what I was looking for. Because it was on a weekend, I asked Jim to call the number on the ad and ask for information, which he did first thing on Monday, and they sent us a packet of information. As I reviewed it, the more I got excited. Jim made an appointment for us to see the doctor for consultation. I received a packet through the mail from the doctor’s office with a 22-page questionnaire with questions front and back, very detailed and very specific, which I had to answer and turn in on my first visit. Questions like: “How often do you eat out? How many eggs do you eat each week? Do you have difficulty carrying your grocery bags? How do you feel when . . . and describe your pain. Is it mild, average or severe? Do you have poor concentration?” and many more questions.

On February 12, 1997, before my first visit with this new doctor, and I prayed that God would give us a sign if this is the way He would want us to go. We got there and as soon as we walked in, God confirmed that this was His answer to our prayers. The doctor saw us as he was standing at the hallway when we came in—he immediately met us, and introduced himself to us. Immediately I felt warmness from him and his staff and the place. His clinic was tastefully decorated that it made me feel good. While I was doing the basic routine of checking in on first visits, the doctor was reviewing my answers to the questionnaire, which I turned in. So when I was called in, he was ready to answer my questions—of course, my husband was allowed to go in with me. The doctor had a lot to offer—he said there were a possible five things, which might have caused the rheumatoid arthritis (RA)—malnutrition, severe stress, virus or bacteria, or infection. He wanted to get to the root cause of my health problem and helped me to understand that if I were to use him as my doctor, he and I need to be a team. He assured me that he was going to do his very best to help me but that I had to do most of the hard work. Jim and I went home that afternoon rejoicing in the Lord because His answer to our prayers far exceeded our expectation. We found out that this doctor is a Christian and loves Jesus and looking to His return. His heart is to help his patients get well and help them learn how to take charge over their health through patient education—he was strong on that. His emphasis is on wellness and not just treatment.

I had two more visits with this doctor for physical examination and blood tests. March 5, 1997 was my fourth visit and he gave me a one-page treatment plan in his own handwriting and went through each step very thoroughly. In past experiences, when I saw a doctor, I would see them for maybe 5-10 minutes and out the door I go with a prescription. But it was different with this doctor, he prescribed a list of nutritional supplements for me to take such as: Arth Pro, CD Pak, CoQ10 Enzyme, Garlitrin 4000, Melatonin, Omega Combo, Intestamine, Bromelain, Digestive Enzymes, and Ginger capsules. He was very careful in prescribing supplements—he wanted to be sure that any supplements he told me to take were backed up by research. He also gave me some materials to read to get me educated about the different treatments that are available without the use of drugs, and he suggested for me to read a book, Detecting Your Hidden Allergies by William G. Crook, M.D. My initial reaction was (and of course, I kept it to myself), “What??? I want some relief now. I’ve been in pain so long. Why do I need to read this book?” But again I saw and knew this doctor’s heart that he wanted to help me and he wanted to do all he could. After he explained my treatment plan, Jim and I went to the health food store to get my nutritional supplements. Even in my pain and even if I knew it would be a lot of hard work on my part, I was so excited to begin my regimen.

My treatment included changing my diet and following the “Cave Man Diet” from Dr. Crook’s book—which meant no sugar, no processed foods, and no fast foods, etc., and even included eliminating some of my favorite foods, such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplants, which are called the “night shade plants.” I was placed on food elimination to detect hidden food allergies, which can also be trigger foods. The book, How to Eat Away Arthritis by Lauri M. Aesoph, N.D., helped me further understand why I needed to eliminate such foods. I also had a food allergy test through blood work to detect what foods I was allergic to and the result was very helpful. It showed the foods that I was allergic to as “high, medium, and low.” Those that I was highly allergic to I eliminated them. Then the foods that I was medium allergic, I was able to eat them, but I had to rotate them about every four days. And then the foods that I was low allergic to I was able to eat them everyday. During this time of food elimination, Ultra Clear® was added for nutritional support. Note that I had follow up visits with my doctor while in this regimen.

Simple things like drinking eight, 8-ounce glasses of water every day was added to my regimen, plus 30 minutes of walking and 30 minutes of sun every day. At some point, my doctor had me to take my body basal temperature for ten days to make sure my thyroid was functioning well. I had hypothyroidism and he gave something for that—but not drugs. He also wanted to make sure I had a healthy gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which is sometimes called our “lifeline.” When one does not have a healthy GI tract or digestive system, it can leak toxins in the body, which causes disease. This is called “the leaky gut syndrome.” Through blood tests, my adrenal glands, which secretes the stress hormone, were found not functioning well, so he gave me something for that too—again not drugs. I had nutritional IV treatments, which had vitamins and minerals, for three sessions. He told me to keep doing what I was already doing before I saw him, which was juicing and taking vitamins and other nutritional supplements. He just added more supplements and changed the vitamins I was taking because some vitamins have fillers in them and he wanted to be sure I was taking the right kind. He placed me on what he called the 4R program, which is Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, and Repair.

I started my regimen March 8, 1997 and after a month, I had rashes for a week, which I believe was caused by my body detoxifying—but it was also my major breakthrough, because I started getting better each day after that. At about 90 days plus after my initial treatment, I had a follow up and blood work done on June 1997, and my blood test result showed that the rheumatoid factor, which was 81 when I was diagnosed with RA, was down to 26 which was very close to normal. ( Normal is 20.) This result confirmed what I was suspecting because I also was feeling better each day and noticed my symptoms slowly disappearing. I started feeling good, sleeping better, no stiffness in the morning and very mild pain. I continued to do my daily regimen and by March 1998, I noticed that all my symptoms were gone. We were vacationing with my family in the Philippines at that time, and one day we shopped the whole day and I was able to walk in the mall without experiencing any pain, had all the energy to do that, and truly enjoyed that day.

In April of 1998, I went for follow up and blood work and the result showed that I was back to normal. Another blood test was done in July 1998 because my doctor wanted to be sure and again the result showed normal. What a result! My doctor asked that three more blood tests, one each month, be done to make sure the lab did not made an error and after two of those times, and it still showed normal! The symptoms I was experiencing gradually disappeared and it was great to feel good again. I had forgotten the pain I experienced for quiet a period of time. I never forgot to thank God each day for His healing even if I was still in the midst of great pain.

My visits with my doctor and his staff had always been an experience because of his heart to see his patients get well, and his outstanding staff. I actually looked forward to my visits because of their emphasis on patient education, wellness and their holistic approach—the total person—mind, body, and spirit. I was very impressed about their genuine care about my well-being.

The Role of Glyconutrition. My symptoms began in 1996, and by 1998 they were gone. It was in 1997 that my husband and I were first introduced to glyconutrition by a friend and began taking it. However, I never associated my healing with glyconutrition until years later, when we first learned more about how glyconutrition can benefit the body in so many amazing ways. Now I realize that glyconutrition played a role, maybe the key role, in my healing. But I still must give some credit to the health regimen described above. What I Learned Physically and Spiritually

Physically. Health is a gift from God. What I do with it is my responsibility. I have control over my health through the fuel that I put in my body. I have no control over viruses, bacteria, pollution, the air I breathe and other foreign invaders that attack my body, but I have control over my internal environment that I create. Health starts from within. Absence of pain or a major illness is not a guarantee that I am healthy. Just as I need spiritual cleansing, I also need physical cleansing and it includes getting rid of emotional toxins. My body is made to heal itself given the proper nutrition from the food God created for us to eat, especially fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, beans, etc., that science is now finding has medicinal components; and by treating it right through avoiding and learning to handle stress by maintaining balance in all that I do.

Disease took over when my resistance reached its lowest point. I created an internal environment for it to take place. I allowed myself to be under so much work-related pressure and stress, such as by bringing my work home everyday and even on weekends, and because of that I did not give time to prepare our meals. We ordered our meals delivered (a lot of times) from places that make home deliveries, and we ate out a lot too. Based on what I now know about nutrition, we were not eating very healthful meals before I got sick. Not eating properly and with severe stress, my body broke down. It was stretched to its limit. I learned that our bodies can only take so much beating. It works hard to adapt to everything imposed upon it for as long as it can, but it gets to the point when it breaks down and disease takes over. God created an internal doctor called the immune system that protects us from foreign invaders, constantly working and fighting to keep us from getting sick. But if we constantly subject our bodies to so much abuse or over-stretch it, again our bodies break down. As Dr. Gordon Tessler, author of the book The Genesis Diet, said, “If we are not taking time to be healthy, we are taking time to be sick.”

Spiritually

God did not leave me here helpless. He has already provided for me from the beginning what I need to get well when I get sick. Genesis 1:29 tells me of the best diet to keep my body healthy.

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

Leviticus 11 also tells us the clean foods that we can eat.

And in Revelation 22:2 it says, “ . . . And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Again, science is just now discovering the medicinal properties in plants, the leaves of the tree like the olive tree.

He also kept me encouraged through people around me. I went home one day from work and found a message from my boss, a well-known Christian leader, with a prayer for me.

When Jesus died on the cross, He not only died for the forgiveness of my sins, but He gave me healing from ALL things that I needed healing from—spiritual, emotional, and yes—physical—as His Word says in Isaiah 53:5 and 1 Peter 2:24, “ . . . by his stripes ye are/were healed.” In Psalm 103:3, I learned that He not only forgave my sins but “He heals ALL your diseases.” To borrow a phrase from one of my husband’s e-mail friends who is a doctor “Tell me what part is not included in ALL.”

God is true to His promises. I was able to do all that I needed to do because He gave me strength to do it as He promised in His Word and He healed me, again as He promised in His Word.

Our faith is important. God does not force His benefits on us. In all the instances in the New Testament where Jesus healed someone, most passages mention the faith of the person healed.

God is our Ultimate Authority when it comes to our health and healing. By all means I do not play down the importance of medical doctors. I believe they are here for a purpose and God uses them to help us understand what is going on in our bodies, and in fact, He used the first specialist to diagnose my illness and then my other doctor to help me know what to do. But God is our Ultimate Doctor because He is our Creator. He is our Ultimate Nutritionist because He created our digestive system, and therefore He is the only One who knows exactly what is going on in our bodies and He knows exactly how to fix it. God’s Word is the best book for preventive medicine. God’s grace is always sufficient. All the time I was sick, I never missed a single workday except when I had to go for my doctor appointments and when I experienced rashes all over my body during my detoxification, which was a major breakthrough because after that I started getting better each day.

My Encouragement to You

“Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths” (Proverbs 3:5,6, Amplified Bible).

Romans 12:1, 2 says, “Therefore, I urge, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” God’s will is for us to be healthy. Every day we are exposed to toxins in our environment. Every day we have stressors beyond our control. Every day we are bombarded through commercials how good processed foods are, but which do not give us the proper nutrients that we need to be healthy and stay healthy. We are being told what medications to take while at the same time telling us the bad side effects of it. Which way are we to go?

Seek God first—Jeremiah 29:13 says, “When you seek me, you will find Me.” God honors His Word. We need to stand on His Word not only when we get sick but at all times. God’s best for us when we are sick is not merely masking the symptoms or a quick fix but getting to the root cause of it. God’s best for us is to feel good at all times and not just use a cup of coffee or a teaspoon of sugar, or a can of soda, or a chocolate chips cookie to perk us up or get us through the day. God’s best for us is to have energy and optimum health so that we can enjoy life fully while still here on earth and be able to perform at our best in what He has called us to do. Don’t settle for less; settle for God’s best. It is hard to praise God when we are not feeling well, when we are tired, and when we are barely just making it each day. We need to start thinking that this is not God’s best for us. Are you just living? Or are you thriving? “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body” (I Corinthians 6:19-20, NIV).

Today, I am a testimony of God’s power, love, grace, faithfulness—healed of an incurable and degenerative disease for which a specialist said there was “no known cause and no known cure,” and I could get crippled. God gets all the credit and to Him be all the glory and praise! It was a long journey to a better health, a difficult one, but He saw me through and proved Himself. It has been six years since I was diagnosed of rheumatoid arthritis and has been four years since I got healed and I continue to enjoy better health.

God’s Word says in 1 Corinthians 3:16, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy Him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.” Again, “present your bodies as a living sacrifice unto Him . . . as an act of worship to Him.” And finally, keep in heart His promise in 3 John 2, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”

I pray God’s very best as you start your journey to better health and by the way Yolly’s health link—our Creator, Redeemer, great God and Savior Jesus Christ. He can do for you what He did for me.

Ask Him to lead you to your pathway to healing.

God bless you,

Yolly Bramlett
